ENVIRONMENTAL
ENHANCEMENTS

Salfords & Sidlow Parish Council signed up to the Tree Charter Scheme in August 2019 to demonstrate the important role trees play in our lives.

The 10 Principles of the Tree Charter are: -

  • Sustain landscapes rich in wildlife
  • Plant for the future
  • Celebrate the power of trees to inspire
  • Grow forests of opportunity and innovation
  • Protect irreplaceable trees and woods
  • Plan greener local landscapes
  • Recover health, hope and wellbeing with the help of trees
  • Make trees accessible to all
  • Combat the threats to our habitats
  • Strengthen our landscapes with trees.

To date the Parish Council has planted over 600 trees.

Many have been saplings (hawthorn, rowan, blackthorn, silver birch, hazel, common oak wild cherry, field maple, grey willow and dogwood) secured through the Woodland Trust which have been planted at Salfords Social Club and at Monotype Sports and Social Club. We are grateful for our residents who helped on Tree Charter Days to come and help plant them. Residents also had the opportunity to take some to plant on their land during Covid.

We have also committed funding and planted 5 large trees approx. 3m tall.

1 Rowan (Sorbus hupehensis) at Christ the King church to celebrate renewing our 50-year lease.

1 Field Maple (Acer campestre Elegant)  planted at Salfords Social Club to recognise the partnership between the Parish Council and Social Club for use of their open space for our residents.

1 Oak (Quercus petraea) planted at Monotype Sports and Social Club

1 Field Maple (Acer campestre Elegant)  planted for Dunraven Avenue Residents

1 Oak (Quercus petraea)  at Westvale roundabout in Sidlow

Latest update on verge planting and future plans

The Parish Council received the trees from the the Local Authority Treescape fund. We received 9 large and about 100 sapling (mixture of Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn), Prunus avium (Wild Cherry) and Tilia cordata (small leaf lime). The large were: -

- 8 x Salix Caprea - 1 to 1.5m 5l -

- 1 x Populous Nigra - - 1 to 1.5m 5l -

The majority of the trees have been planted at Monotype Sports and Social Club along the line of the footpath and around the tennis court. Some trees have also been planted in Sidlow.

SCC staff member, Robbie Stewart,  has been recruited in a new role as Highways Environmental Officer. One of his main roles is to ensure that he supports the SCC initiative for tree planting by identifying areas on the Highway verges which would be suitable for planting and managing the process.

After several years of requesting we were delighted to have 5 trees  (3 x Genkos and 2 x Silver Birch) planted on Pear Tree Hill. Robbie has also arranged planting a replacement Willow tree on Salbrook Road junction and 1 Acer mauritz upright and a Gingko on Westvale Park roundabout.

The Parish Council now intend to plant daffodil and crocus bulbs on this area of verge to help brighten it up.

Queen's Green Canopy

The Queen’s Green Canopy (GQC) is a tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Everyone across the UK is being invited to plant trees through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

The QGC will create a network of individual trees, avenues, copses and whole woodlands in honour of The Queen's service and the legacy she has built. This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.

The Parish Council is proud to be supporting this by providing trees to Christ the King Church and Salfords Primary School.
